A journal for readers

On reading slowly

A good page
leaves a trace.

Notes made while reading, and thoughts that arrive after a book has been put away.

The useful margin

A brief note beside a paragraph can preserve the first question it raised. Returning to that note later is a conversation with your earlier attention.

Not every page needs a mark. Sometimes a folded scrap of paper and one sentence in a notebook are enough.

A place to begin

Choose a passage that stayed with you and describe why, without trying to summarize the whole book.

Read it again

A second reading makes room for things that were easy to miss the first time: rhythm, a small gesture, a recurring image.

Keep one question

Leave room for uncertainty. A thoughtful question is often a better reading note than a final verdict.
